A very Dog Friendly Country Hotel in the Heart of Devon

A relaxed, friendly Devon Country Hotel with six acres of grounds on the River Taw, where dogs are very, very welcome.

WE LOVE DOGS

Part of the Family

As dog owners ourselves, we know how much it means to be able to bring your dog away with you.

For most of us, our dogs are members of the family and at the Fox and Hounds Country Hotel, we really are very dog friendly. From treats at reception, bowls and treats in your room, plenty of water bowls around the hotel to gourmet doggy dishes, ice cream and even doggy beer and cocktails!

Most of our staff are dog owners and all of us are dog lovers, so you can be assured that your dog will plenty of fuss and very warm welcome! We want you to have a relaxed, worry-free, and enjoyable stay, where you, and every member of your family, feel perfectly at home.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or want to book your stay, or book your stay online.
TAKE YOUR DOG WHEREVER YOU GO

Access All Areas

Dogs are allowed in all areas of the hotel. You can bring your dog for meals, for a relaxing coffee, or an evening drink at the bar. We also have terrace and garden seating if you prefer to be outside. In colder months our four-legged guests love to curl up by our large fireplace.

We permit dogs in almost all of our rooms and several rooms even have their own dog-safe patios. Check out our Stay page for details of the room type most suitable for you and your pets.

A DOGGY PARADISE

Grounds

With 6 acres to explore, our grounds are a paradise for dogs. Enjoy a leisurely stroll around the grounds, discover our Luxury Treehouse and bring some bread to feed the ducks on our two ponds. There are open fields for off-lead running around and playing games but the grounds are suitable for  more elderly dogs that prefer a sedate pace .

For dogs that love the water, or just like to dip their toes, the River Taw runs the entire length of our lower gardens. And don’t worry, we have wash stations and plenty of dog towels for drying off afterwards.

If you’re interested in exploring a bit further, you’ll find lots of Things to Do within a short distance of the hotel, most of which are dog friendly.

FOREST WALKS

Safe, Dog Friendly Walks

The hotel and surrounding area sit on what used to be 7000 acres of the Eggesford Estate. Much of this land was purchased by the Forestry Commission in the early 1900s and as such, there are miles of safe, off-road forest walks just minutes from the hotel. We have maps of the many of the walks, and there are plenty more for you to discover.

DARTMOOR, EXMOOR, NORTH DEVON

Beaches & Moors

We’re centrally located in Devon between Dartmoor and Exmoor, which offer miles of beautiful open land, amazing views, archaeology, ancient history and unique wildlife for you and your dog to explore.

Our stunning North Devon beaches are famously vast when the tides are out, and more than a match for even the most energetic puppies who love a good run-around.

SIZE DOESN'T MATTER

Big Hearts

All dogs have big hearts, no matter how big they are on the outside. We’ve have some very large special guests stay with us, as well as some teeny tiny ones! All well behaved and socialised dogs are welcome. If you do have a particularly large dog however, do contact us, so we can make sure you have a room that your and your pet(s) will be comfortable in!

A fabulous place for a Dog Holiday
We’ve just come home from a weekend away with our two dogs. This hotel is absolutely set up for dog holidays. Really nice room with two double beds! The really great thing is that you can take your dogs to breakfast and dinner too! The hotel have set the tables out to ensure that every dog has their own space and their parents can eat. On another note – the food was really very good – much better than we were expecting and we absolutely loved eating there every night! We went to the North Devon coast one day, which is very dog friendly and has miles of beach walks – we also popped along to a close forest which had great walks. Our pups are very tired now!!

Doggy Heaven!!!!
A fantastic visit, great hotel with amazing staff, a big shout out to Tyler, Tom, Ruby and Zac who all made mine the wife and the furry sons stay so special. Also thanks to the kitchen team, we ate at the hotel 3 nights on the trot and the food was fantastic in particular the Sunday dinner which was amazing!! When you go make sure you go to the bottom field and see Bob the horse!

We stayed at the Fox and Hounds Country Hotel for a mini break. It was FANTASTIC. Lovely staff who were very friendly and helpful. We also brought our dog along for the break, and we were not alone. There were several other people there with the same idea. Everyone (including the dogs) got on very well. One final thing… You MUST eat in the restaurant. The food is some of the best I have ever eaten anywhere….even on cruise ships. I really cannot praise this hotel highly enough. Please visit, you will not be disappointed.

Welcoming and very dog orientated
This was our second visit and we received a very warm welcome. Our room was spacious and very clean. The bed was very comfortable with lovely pillows. It was really nice to be able to take our dog everywhere in the hotel. There were 2 large dog bowls in our room and also dog biscuits. At every entrance there was a towel to dry wet paws and at the main entrance dog treats for you to give to your dog. The dining room was spacious with plenty of room and there were comfortable seats for you to sit after your meal. The food was exceptional and there was a good choice and occasionally there were special dishes. The breakfasts had a good choice and plenty of tea and coffee. As it was my husbands birthday they made a wonderful cake with many thanks to Helen.

Fantastic dog friendly hotel, a real gem!
What a fantastic hotel. The staff are extremely accommodating and friendly. The restaurant does amazing food, one of the best pasta dishes I have ever eaten! To say this hotel is dog friendly is an understatement! There are treats everywhere, a dog bowl in your room, a drying towel by the door and a dog menu in the restaurant!

Fabulous location , comfortable and very dog friendly, with lovely staff
Comfy hotel with large grounds by the river . Dogs very welcomed and allowed the the bedrooms , breakfast room, bar and dining area plus all parts of the garden . 3 areas to the garden , the formal bit, the wooded bit and the meadow beside the river . There are several clean tidy bins dotted around for ‘ poo bags ‘ we had a superior double which we founds very spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was delicious, and we liked most of the dinners too. Dog water bowls with mat are provided in the dog friendly rooms. Loved it , and would definitely go back . Most people have dogs !

A Warm Welcome
Three days with friends and our two dogs and we were made to feel very welcome and the staff were so helpful and friendly. The garden and grounds are lovely and the food extremely good. The rooms are comfortable, if a little eclectic in their furnishing. There are lots of walks nearby but it is probably best to have a car even though the state is just down the road. I would recommend the Fox & Hounds for a relaxing few days.

Fabulous dog friendly hotel
We arrived here with my 2 dogs and my sister’s dog. We were made to feel so welcome. Dog water and treats as soon as you walk in the door. We had room 16 which had a four poster bed, a bathroom then an adjoining room with a sofa bed. Dogs are allowed everywhere and there’s a lovely outside seating area overlooking the gardens. Breakfast is buffet if they are busy which is delicious! Eggs of your choice can be ordered separately. Juices, fresh coffee, fresh fruit and yoghurt and croissants too. The evening meal was superb with a lovely choice from lamb chops to fish and chips! Oh and not forgetting the home made scones with clotted cream for that afternoon delight!! The staff – well I have never come across a more accommodating crew. Nothing was too much trouble for them what ever you needed they sorted out always with a smile on their faces, nothing was too much trouble. It is in the middle of the countryside but perfect for a chill out break with lots of walks on site for your pooches!! You won’t regret a stay here for a lovely relaxing break with good quality food!!

Perfect three night stay with our pup in what is a truly dog friendly hotel
Beautiful, spacious, comfortable and clean room. Friendly and helpful staff and delicious, fairly priced food and wine all in a gorgeous setting. From the moment Maddy responded to my booking request in a friendly and welcoming manner to moment we left, we had a fantastic stay and will definitely be visiting again. Staff that are good at what they do. Beautiful building in a great setting. Molly our lurcher loved the river running through the gardens, the wood burner as well as all the treats on offer and plenty of well behaved canine friends to meet. Thank you Fox and Hounds team for making all three of us so welcome.

A gem of a hotel
A most pleasant stay in a delightfully friendly hotel. The food was excellent and ranges from scallops through tasty chicken dishes, burgers and fish and chips to amazingly presented deserts. As for the cheese board – no comment! Ignore the cholesterol and its not really there is it?! The rooms were warm and large with quirky furniture that is far to big to fit in any modern house. The staff were delightful, everywhere. Special mention goes to Tom who is front of house for bar and restaurant and Maddy who is on reception. Nothing is too much trouble for these two. They make you want to return. The breakfasts and breakfast staff were delightful too and we had a relaxed time. We don’t have dogs but it was clear that they are welcomed and seem to love it there. I guess if I got that much attention I’d feel the same!
